Facilitating Solar Power in Bompaso: Training, Fieldwork and Community Infrastructure

In Bompaso, a small off-grid community near Worawora in the Oti Region, access to reliable electricity has long been a challenge. Without power, community spaces are limited in how they can be used, especially after dark affecting meetings, learning activities, and access to basic services.

To address this, Dream Renewables partnered with PACE Ghana and Twende Solar to bring solar power to the local community centre and build local skills in solar power, energy efficiency and electrical work.

19 local people attended an intensive and hands on training in solar PV design and installation. Alongside the training, a solar power system was installed at the Bompaso community centre, creating both immediate impact for the community and hands-on experience for trainees.

Some trainees have already taken next steps. Two went on to attend Dream Renewables’ solar entrepreneurship bootcamp, others are supporting maintenance of the system in Bompaso, and one is currently exploring an internship opportunity with Dream Renewables.

Held from 9th to 20th March 2026, the programme brought together 19 participants (18 Ghanaians and 1 Nigerian) for an intensive training in solar PV design and installation.

The training covered key areas such as system sizing and design, installation of off-grid solar systems, electrical wiring, health and safety practices, as well as system maintenance and troubleshooting. Sessions were structured to build both technical understanding and practical confidence.

A strong emphasis was placed on hands-on learning. Trainees did not only learn in the classroom, they applied their knowledge directly through fieldwork, supporting the installation of a solar power system at the Bompaso community centre. From mounting solar panels to assisting with wiring and system setup, participants were actively involved at every stage of the installation process.

This combination of training and real-world application ensured that participants left with practical, job-relevant skills and a clear understanding of how solar systems are implemented in community settings.

Powering the community centre with clean energy

After the training, all 19 trainees stayed for an additional week to support the Dream Renewables team complete the installation of solar power for the local community centre. 

The newly installed solar system now provides consistent power throughout the day and into the evening for Bompaso community centre. The system consists of a 9.8 kW solar array, a 20 kW inverter, and a 45 kWh battery storage system.

In practical terms, this solar power system will provide reliable energy for lighting, phone charging, and fans throughout the building. It will also support key services, including powering computers in the library, a vaccine fridge in the health centre, and a projector and screen in the meeting room.

For a community without access to grid electricity, this significantly changes how the space can be used day-to-day. Activities are no longer limited by daylight, and the centre becomes a more functional and accessible hub for the community.

In addition, the system will power a small shop and fridge-freezer selling chilled drinks. The income generated from this shop will help fund the ongoing maintenance of the system, supporting its long-term sustainability.

What This Means Going Forward

This project goes beyond a single installation.

It has equipped 19 individuals with practical, job-relevant solar skills, while also building a broader set of transferable capabilities. Through the training, participants developed a foundational understanding of energy calculations, system sizing, and problem-solving in real engineering contexts, alongside hands-on electrical wiring and installation skills.

These are skills that extend beyond solar , supporting pathways into technical employment, entrepreneurship, and further training.

Early signs of this progression are already visible. Following the programme, two participants advanced to Dream Renewables’ solar entrepreneurship bootcamp, where they began exploring ideas for applying solar solutions within their own communities and local markets. Others are supporting the monitoring and maintenance of the Bompaso system, ensuring the installation continues to operate effectively.

At the community level, the impact is equally significant. The solar-powered centre is now a reliable space for learning, meetings, and daily activities , creating new opportunities that were previously limited by lack of electricity.

By combining training with real infrastructure, the project addresses both skills gaps and energy access challenges at the same time.
