Strengthening confidence, inclusion, and opportunities for women across our organisation.

Our Female Leadership Journey with Gower Street

At Dream Renewables, our mission is not only to expand clean and affordable energy across Ghana but also to build an organisation where every team member, especially women has the confidence, skills, and opportunities to lead.

This year, our team took part in the Gower Street Female Leadership Programme, a powerful initiative designed to deepen conversations around women in leadership across the organisations they support. Through a series of interviews and reflection sessions, we explored the experiences of female leaders from AfriKids, Think Education, SUNG Foundation, CAMFED, EduSpots and more.

These conversations highlighted important truths: women often lead from resilience, compassion, and service, and yet many face barriers, from confidence gaps to limited representation in decision-making spaces. The programme pushed us to reflect on our own organisation and ask:

What practical steps can Dream Renewables take to intentionally support, grow, and celebrate female leadership?

To answer this, our team engaged in internal discussions, sharing insights, experiences, and ideas from the interviews. This process led us to develop our first 7-Point Female Leadership Action Plan, a framework that shows our commitment to building a supportive, inclusive, and empowering space for women across Dream Renewables.

Our 5-Point Female Leadership Action Plan

This plan will guide our work over the coming months and years. It is designed to be actionable, measurable, and rooted in the realities women shared during the Gower Street programme.

  • Action 1: Provide public speaking and leadership training:  Professional trainers will provide a range of inclusive training on public speaking, and various aspects of leadership and personal development.

  • Action 2: Host an annual Women in Sustainability event: The event will be open to female staff, alumni and all women working in sustainability in Ghana.

  • Action 3: Create an internal mentorship system between women in Dream Renewables: This system would enable knowledge sharing between female staff and support personal and professional growth.

  • Action 4: Provide workshops in unconscious bias, inclusive teamwork and equitable decision making: These workshops will be delivered to the whole team by our impressive Trustee, Lawrencia Awuku.

  • Action 5: Develop a Gender Inclusive Workplace Policy: In 20206 we will develop a policy that promotes inclusion, equality, female leadership and details a transparent pathway to leadership.

  • Action 6: Stress management and mental health awareness and support: We will offer 6 monthly training, workshops or events focusing on mental health awareness and management. This will be facilitated by mental health professionals.

  • Action 7: Hold an Annual Team Retreat: Our team retreats will promote a work life balance and good mental health and team building. This year the team will spend a week away at Lake Bosumtwi.

Why This Matters

Dream Renewables works closely with communities where women play a central role in energy access, decision-making and sustainable development. Strengthening female leadership within our own organisation will not only enrich our team but also reflect the values we promote in the communities we serve.

Empowered women create empowered communities and we are striving to take deliberate steps toward that future.

Dream Renewables is proud to take this step, inspired by the stories and guidance shared through the Gower Street Female Leadership Programme. Together, we are building a culture where women feel seen, supported, and confident to lead, helping us shape a stronger and more inclusive renewable energy future for Ghana.
